Moscow Street Network Development
Moscow General Planning Institute, 2025
These maps were included in the final presentations for city stakeholders to determine the design vector of Moscow street network. These aren't always monumental projects, as it always happens to metro construction. However, with every small 'street' project, the city continues to grow and develop, allowing residents to avoid traffic jams, and make new routes, especially from new apartment complexes. Furthermore, it also gives an opportunity to get rid of unexplained vacant lots and abandoned industrial zones, which increases the efficiency of city area usage.

All of these projects are no longer under NDA. Each has approval documents that are publicly available (in Russian). There's also a lot of media coverage of the projects. Of more than a 1,000 maps and plans I created during my eighteen months at the Institute, at least half was devoted to road construction. This is only the tip of the iceberg shown.

Even more was implemented internally and cannot yet be disclosed due to NDA.

All images are zoomable.
Gazgoldernaya street
A project of a drive through a recently gentrified area along the cargo railway line on the southeast of Moscow. It may be quite hard to understand what is happening on the plan withot being involved in the whole process. Still, you can, for example, try to find differences between the first phase of the project (on the left) and its final, second phase (on the right).

I remember this project as one of the most urgent: over 30 versions of these plans and their derivatives were completed in just two days. Even though it's also one of the most detailed plans I've ever worked on, I still wonder how we managed to get it all done.

The numbers on the plans indicate the locations of street cross-sections, which were included in the final presentation as separate graphic elements.
Penyagino railway station
A project of a drive, which is expected to simplify access to platforms, in particular for buses.

The numbers on the plans indicate the locations of street cross-sections, which were included in the final presentation as separate graphic elements.
Bicycle lanes under 2nd Rostokinsky Bridge
An example of a map with an orthophoto background - an image of the terrain obtained by satellites from space. Such images are often very colorful, so emphasizing the most important information requires a special approach and a revision of the symbols (legend) used with a standard vector background.
Lavochkina street
A fragment of a set of 16 roadway reorganization plans in Moscow. For this project, the client preferred to see the roadway in full detail, with the drawn road lanes shown directly on the plan, rather than just as a number of lanes shown as is customary. Printing this on an A3 size turned out to be somewhat more complicated than simply entering the relevant lane data into a map editor for on-screen use.
Projects from transport analytics department
Below are selected slides from presentations devoted to traffic flow analysis. These are typically created for the current situation and one or more forecast periods using specialized algorithms to see how (in numbers) traffic congestion in the city will change after the construction of new roads or interchanges.
Bridges in the Fili district
Current situation (on the left) and forecast (o the right) with the building of a new bridge.
Skolkovo Innovation Center. Existing connections
On the left the number of arrivals to the center by different modes of transport during a morning rush hour is shown (weekdays). On the right a detailed plan with proper bus lines and the frequency of service is shown (same period).
Other projects
Constructing underpasses in New Moscow, location maps for the stormwater treatment facility and new educational cluster of Lomonosov Moscow State University
